North Bovey Belles WI

Colyton during the Second World War

There are not many of us around who remember what it was like to be a child during the Second World War, so the North Bovey Belles WI were thrilled to hear the experiences of Hugh Dyer-Westacott at their monthly meeting last Thursday.

When he was seven he was evacuated from London with his five year old sister to Camelford in Cornwall during the phoney war and then again to Colyton, East Devon after the outbreak of the war.  Hugh told us of the primitive facilities that existed in farm houses at that time: no running water, no indoor toilets, long walks to school which was 2 ½ miles away etc etc.  But Hugh was totally enthralled by life in the village of Colyton and the people he met.  Despite a lifetime of worldwide adventures, Colyton remained his favourite place all his life.  He finally managed to fulfil his dream and move to Colyton four years ago.  At the moment he is in the process of writing his memoires.

As an organisation we are very aware of the progress of the coronavirus and will make suitable arrangements when appropriate.  However, we are keeping calm and carrying on until further notice.  We are hoping that next month’s meeting on Thursday 9th April at 7.30pm in North Bovey Parish Hall will be “A zero waste lifestyle” by Nina Bailey and Gill Meadows from Moretonhampstead.  We will advise you if there are any changes to this meeting.
