Local Project Revealed! Yesterday we took delivery of finished copies of a book put together in this very parish. It is the story of Stella West-Harling MBE, founder of Ashburton Cookery School. Many of you have met Stella and I know quite a few have taken courses at the school which is regularly voted Top Independent Cookery School in the country. Stella is a well know advocate of everything to do with food and passionate about Dartmoor.

The book is in a coffee-table format and packed with some stunning photography by David Griffen. The food is locally sourced, cooked and photographed at Stella’s cottage in Chagford, and the book put together in North Bovey. At 304 pages and over 100 recipes the emphasis is on the food first in all its unfussy beauty. There is a strong nostalgia aspect with its references to post-war food shortages that resonate in current ‘austerity’ climate. Waste not, want not. And it has local connections aplenty. Some familiar names are to be found in the acknowledgements.

So now I put on a salesman’s hat and utter the dread words “It makes an ideal gift!”. Forgive me. But it really does. You can look inside the book and find out more about Thornberry Press here. The cover price is £25. You can order a copy here.

A local book needs a local offer too – you can buy a copy direct from me for just £20! Ask me or email here. One local chap has ordered 4 copies already!
