North Bovey Meadow
Our meadow is a space for villagers & for nature.
A place for North Bovey Villagers to meet, socialise & enjoy being outdoors.
A space to play, picnic & get together while supporting nature and improving biodiversity.
The meadow will be grazed by livestock during the winter months, but from March to September, a fenced-off area of land will be sheep-free to allow wild flowers, insects and nature to flourish.
We are so lucky to live in a place where the opportunity to enjoy this communal space is possible. With that opportunity comes a responsibility. Regardless of age, if this experiment is going to work, there is a ‘social contract’ in that it will be the responsibility of everyone that uses the meadow to be respectful:
- To take responsibility for your own actions.
- To not leave any litter – who is going to clear up any mess you leave behind if you don’t take it with you?
- To carefully manage the bbq and fire areas. The space has to be used responsibly and, once cooking and fireside fun is done, it is left in readiness for the next villagers that would like to use it.
- To be mindful of any livestock
- To enjoy and nurture any flowers and wildlife that are also making the most of the opportunity to be there
- To be mindful of noise that might be disruptive to villagers who live nearby
If the space cannot be maintained in accordance with the above, it will have to revert back to being a permanent sheep field.
There is a beach and river
There is a big area for ball games & running around
There are river banks to explore & secret dens to be built…. For humans and pets alike…
There is plenty of space for picnics & even the odd alfresco exercise class…
It is a place, safe from traffic, for the village children to play.
There is a really tame slope for tobogganing but it’s an excellent place for building snowmen and having snow ball fights
There are lovely quiet, sunny spots to sit and enjoy the view or read a book.
It’s very much a team effort to create the space for everyone to enjoy. This winter we plan to create a fire pit and bbq area for everyone to use and enjoy.
There will be various events and fund-raisers throughout the year, so do keep an eye on this page and the North Bovey Village Instagram feed for what’s coming up next.
The next event for your diary is:
Winter Celebration: Campfire breakfast. Whenever the weather looks favourable: Date will be announced on the NB WhatsApp group.
This will be a fundraising event for the purchase of the fencing to create the sheep-proof area for next summer.
£10 pp or £15 per family
Up coming events:
January (date TBD): A meeting for the children of the village – fireside dinner, discussion & ideas generator about how they would like to use the space (will feature plenty of hot chocolate and marshmallows obviously!)
March – put up the bird boxes. Work party to clear any debris and vegetation after winter
