St John’s Church

A beautiful church dating from the 13th and 15th centuries. The list of known Rectors dates from 1279 and there was a church on that site before, although no description of it survives. The church was altered during the Victorian years and extensively restored by Viscount Hambleden between 1916-1918.

We are part of the North Dartmoor Parishes, coordinating our services with our neighbouring churches at Moretonhampstead, Lustleigh and Manaton and the chapel at Doccombe.

Currently, we hold 2 services a month on the first and third Sundays. The first Sunday being an informal worship service held at 10.00 am and the third Sunday in the month we celebrate Holy Communion at 9.30 am.

We also organise events and services to mark significant dates in the church calendar such as Mothering Sunday, Harvest Festival and a Remembrance service as well as Easter and Christmas services. Details of upcoming services and events are posted at the church gate and in the porch.

Our church is always open for visitors and you are very welcome to come in at any time and enjoy the special atmosphere of this lovely building. The church hosts an extensive second-hand book stall. If you are a musician, please feel free to play the piano and if you would like to try out the organ please contact a church warden for the key to the organ loft.
