North Bovey footbridge update – 3rd Jan 2014

Posted on behalf of John Clark:

Our Dartmoor National Park Ranger, Serina Rouse, has been to inspect the flood damage to the structure of the footbridge by the Stepping Stones. The bridge has been posted as “closed until further notice”.

Together with Serina we have established what materials will be needed to repair the bridge’s hand rail structure. As soon as suppliers are open for business on Monday 6th Jan, Serina will order the materials for delivery to site within a week or so.

When the weather and river level permit, the North Bovey Conservation Group has offered to assist Serina with the works.

I understand, please correct me if I am wrong as this is a genuine question, that DNP required additional wire netting to the sides of the bridge and this led to a build up of debris during the storms. Thus tuning the bridge into a dam causing additional flooding. “If” this is so would it be possible to discuss this with Serina Rose to see if this might be changed back?

Hello Gary – I understand from John that the sheep netting was removed with agreement of the tenant farmer, Chris Conley, about a week ago.

Most of the footbridge superstructure has now been renewed.Long non stock handrail material is now on order from Hiltons and hopefully will be on site ready to be fitted in about a week.
The bridge was posted by DPNA as closed for safety reasons until completed but someone keeps removing the closure advisory notices.
