Some extracts from the Devon Climate Emergency Response Group

The Devon Climate Emergency Response Group have been working hard to ensure it can support a low-carbon Covid-19 reset.

Traffic levels in Devon are still 30% below pre-lockdown levels and the time is now to instill some of these behaviour changes and ensure there is not a rebound in emissions.

The Net Zero Task Force is still working to create the Interim Devon Carbon Plan and the DCERG group is working to ensure these actions help to facilitate a green recovery.

The group continues to work in collaboration with the economic recovery planning process which is being led by Devon County Council (DCC) to ensure the actions raised in the Interim Devon Carbon Plan are reflected in the economic recovery work from DCC.

Active Travel

The government recognise this moment as a once in a generation opportunity to deliver a lasting transformative change in how we make short journeys in our towns and cities. According to the National Travel Survey, in 2017-18 over 40% of urban journeys were under 2 miles – perfectly suited to walking and cycling.
Active travel is affordable, delivers significant health benefits, has been shown to improve wellbeing, mitigates congestion, improves air quality and has no carbon emissions at the point of use. Towns and cities based around active travel will have happier and healthier citizens as well as lasting local economic benefits.

There is a window of opportunity to act now to embed walking and cycling as part of new long-term commuting habits and reap the associated health, air quality and congestion benefits.
