We Climbed the Tower!

Ascension Day in North Bovey began with – not a bang but a hymn.  The tower was climbed by a doughty band of singers whose voices competed with a stiff spring wind that carried their notes all too swiftly into the ether.  But the view – with sunshine after early rain dappling the hills, fields and woods – was stunning.  So was the breakfast – provided by a bevy of those skilled in mass catering under tricky circumstances.  Well done and thanks to all concerned.

The service itself was refreshingly different from a standard Communion service, including such innovations as the youngest member of the congregation, Amelia Johnson, blowing out the Easter candle to signify the Christian year moving into another phase.  Communion was shared with everyone standing in the chancel before the ascent of the tower.

The tradition of having Ascension Day service at North Bovey has had a makeover since the Rector Simon Franklin arrived just over a year ago – and the presence of a large and enthusiastic crowd, including those from other parishes in the benefice, seems to have been a very positive vote to continue in this manner.

So, for your 2014 diaries, note the date!  Quite a bit later – so perhaps the weather will be even kinder than it was this time: 29th May.
