    OAFs – Monday 15th September

Hello all Our next OAFs meeting will be tomorrow (Monday) 15th September in the Parish Hall at 7.00pm.  It would be great to see you, if you’re able to come. Just a reminder, that the idea of OAFs (which stands for Open Arts Forum) is to explore various aspects of the arts and literature in a considered and enjoyable way.  We haven’t been going long, but we’re planning generally to meet once a month and each session will have a pre-declared topic for discussion, to which you will be expected to respond by bringing with you a piece of literary work.  This could be in the form of an extended…

    Open Arts Forum

Hello We had a lovely gathering in the Parish Hall on Monday 9th with our inaugural OAF meeting!  The subject was ‘Village Life’ and a great selection of different glimpses into village life were offered, and discussed enthusiastically!  These ranged from the diaries of the Rev Thornton (the Rector in North Bovey for 50 years in the late 19th century), to Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, to the works of Miss Read, and a song by Ray Davies, released in 1968 by The Kinks! Our next OAF meeting will be on Monday 18th August at 7.00pm for a couple of hours or so, with the subject ‘Life Changing/Changes’. Just…

    First cuckoo?

I know there have been other sightings and hearings of cuckoos, but has anyone heard one in the village? I just want to put it on record that I heard my first cuckoo in the village just now – around 2.00pm on 14th May. No idea whereabouts it was, but will go and see if I can see it too!

    Open Arts Forum

A group of villagers convened in the Parish Hall on Monday, 28th April with the idea of becoming OAFs!! Let us explain further……. The idea is to explore various aspects of the arts and literature in a considered and enjoyable way. It is proposed that we meet once a month and each session will have a pre-declared topic for discussion, to which you will be expected to respond by bringing with you a piece of literary work. This could be in the form of an extended quotation from a book or play, a song or a piece of music, a photograph, a painting, a piece of embroidery etc. This may…

North Bovey farmers on BBC Spotlight

I’ve just spotted Malcolm Osborne and Hazel Pearse featured in a piece on BBC Spotlight this evening, talking about swaling on ‘the common’. Trying to find the link on BBC iPlayer but only yesterday’s edition is up there at the moment. Will post later if I can find it.

    Previous occupant at Chancery Cottage?

Hello all I’m getting post at Chancery Cottage for someone called Collin Greest.  I’ve never heard of him, and I asked Wendy (the previous owner) who doesn’t know him either.  Currently I’m just putting the letters back in the box with ‘Not known at this address’ written on them.  It occured to me that someone in the village might know him and have a forwarding address.  Please let me know if you do. Many thanks Jennifer

North Bovey footbridge update – 3rd Jan 2014

Posted on behalf of John Clark: Our Dartmoor National Park Ranger, Serina Rouse, has been to inspect the flood damage to the structure of the footbridge by the Stepping Stones. The bridge has been posted as “closed until further notice”. Together with Serina we have established what materials will be needed to repair the bridge’s hand rail structure. As soon as suppliers are open for business on Monday 6th Jan, Serina will order the materials for delivery to site within a week or so. When the weather and river level permit, the North Bovey Conservation Group has offered to assist Serina with the works.
