Competitions in the Church for North Bovey Fair
Our children’s competition this year is ‘Decorate a Balloon‘. Decorate a balloon with what ever you want, how ever you want and as many times as you want! Lot’s of colourful entries would be lovely. If you find yourself all grown up then the competition for you is in showing off your gardening skills. This year we’d like to fill the Church with glorious produce. Just bring the best of what you’ve grown. It doesn’t matter if it’s a mix of vegetables or one prize specimen, flowers and herbs growing in pots, cut & bunched or one prize bloom. We are open to anything and everything. This will be…

Safe Stolen! Break in!
Devon and Cornwall Police Community Messaging System has generated this: This message relates to crime report no. 087630/14. Sometime between 2330hrs on Sunday 6th July and 0800hrs on Monday 7th July 2014 a public house in The Village, North Bovey was broken into by forcing the front door. Once inside the intruders stole a big grey heavy metal floor safe and contents. The safe had been bolted to the floor. Have you seen any suspicious activity or vehicles in the area recently? Please keep a look out for the safe in case the intruders discarded it locally. Police are keen to hear from anyone who may have information that could…

Police – Operation Fardel
Operation Fardel is Devon and Cornwall Police response to a professionally run national scam that is attempting to defraud people, many of whom are vulnerable due to age, out of thousands of pounds. The offenders are tending to exhaust opportunities in one particular area of the country before moving onto another. Within our force area Torbay has been targeted but within the past few days West Cornwall, in particular Helston has been the focus where a number of victims have transferred money into the offenders back accounts. Within the last 48 hours there are reports of over £130000 being taken. The offender calls the victim purporting to be a police…

Spotted flycatcher!
At long last I have seen the spotted flycatcher in our lane this year. There used to be one who regularly used the village pump as one of its stopping off places, but it would always get scared off during the fair – which incidentally, is less than a month away. If anyone reading this remembers Alec Lees he and Barbara would always visit our gates to see the bird in summer.

Himalayan Balsam Bash Monday 23rd June
Many parts of the River Bovey banks are infested with Himalayan Balsam a noxious invasive weed that causes a great deal of damage to river banks and displaces many native plants. Each year around mid June a group of Parish volunteers join Natural England and Dartmoor National Park volunteers to destroy the invader by mechanical means which mainly involves uprooting the plants by pulling and stacking the debris to allow it to compost. This year there will be a “Balsam Bash” taking place on Monday 23rd June along the banks of the River Bovey starting at Blackaller Bridge (Bovey Bridge) and working towards “Bovey Castle”. Anyone willing to join in…

Open Arts Forum
Hello We had a lovely gathering in the Parish Hall on Monday 9th with our inaugural OAF meeting! The subject was ‘Village Life’ and a great selection of different glimpses into village life were offered, and discussed enthusiastically! These ranged from the diaries of the Rev Thornton (the Rector in North Bovey for 50 years in the late 19th century), to Under Milk Wood by Dylan Thomas, to the works of Miss Read, and a song by Ray Davies, released in 1968 by The Kinks! Our next OAF meeting will be on Monday 18th August at 7.00pm for a couple of hours or so, with the subject ‘Life Changing/Changes’. Just…
