Help us to measure the Night Sky Quality in North Bovey
For information come to the Parish Hall this Sunday 31st January at noon
DARK SKY SURVEY OF NORTH BOVEY WINTER 2016
As one of the activities associated with the Heritage Lottery funded, Moor than Meets the Eye Parishscapes project, we are carrying out a survey of the quality of the night skies in our Parish.
We shall be making quantitative measurements using Sky Quality meters during 2016, with a view to providing DNPA with data for a dark skies landscape policy for Dartmoor.
In addition to the quantitative data there are a variety of ways of measuring night sky quality, and one of the most effective ways is by looking for the faintest star that can be seen with the naked eye. This provides what is known as Naked Eye Limiting Magnitude, NELM.
For observers in our area the constellation of Ursa Minor, the Little Bear, provides an excellent choice for estimating NELM.
The overall shape of Ursa Minor is made up of seven bright-ish stars, but around and amongst these are many more fainter stars.
From 1st Feb to 10th Feb, we would like as many people in the Parish to take part and send us this data in the form
Observer Name : Location : Date : Time : NELM
If you are unable to come to the meeting this Sunday and would like to be involved, please contact Laurence Shorthouse 441224 (laurence.shorthouse@gmail.com)
